Tensions flared within the ranks of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) as the party's Parliamentary Board found itself at the center of a contentious debate over the coveted ticket for NA-121.
The episode unfolded during a recent meeting where Sheikh Rohail Asghar, a key party figure, declared his intention to contest the election from his native constituency, NA-121.
Sheikh Rohail Asghar, addressing the board, underscored the historical significance of NA-121 for his family, revealing that his ancestors had a longstanding tradition of contesting elections from this very constituency.
"I have been actively involved in politics in NA-121, and I have submitted my nomination papers there," he asserted.
He further justified his claim, highlighting his past support for Ayaz Sadiq during the 2018 elections when a portion of NA-121 merged with Sadiq's constituency.
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, however, presented a counter-narrative, revealing that a significant portion, approximately 56%, of his old constituency had been incorporated into NA-121.
Despite this, Sadiq expressed his unwavering commitment to party discipline, emphasizing that he would respect any decision made by the party leadership regarding ticket distribution.
Sources inside the meeting reported a palpable atmosphere of tension as Sheikh Rohail Asghar delivered his impassioned speech and promptly exited the premises afterward.
PML-N leadership now faces a critical decision regarding the conflicting claims over the NA-121 ticket, a matter that has put the party's unity to the test. Meanwhile, the final decision on the ticket for NA-121 will rest with Nawaz Sharif himself.
